Get to know the hosts behind Lookout Lodge and River Bluff Retreat, two Mississippi River getaways designed with family, relaxation, and memorable experiences in mind. In this conversation, they share the inspiration behind their properties, the thoughtful touches that make each stay special, their favorite local spots, and why helping families create lasting memories is the most rewarding part of hosting.

1. What inspired you to start hosting in Wisconsin and Iowa? How did you choose the names for Lookout Lodge and River Bluff Retreat?      4 years ago, we sold a business and were looking to invest in something new. Someone gave us the idea of short-term rentals, so we started to investigate that avenue. It was a steep learning curve, but we threw ourselves into the journey of becoming hosts! We are in Northeast Iowa, so we wanted to keep our search within a couple hours of where we live. This was important to us so that we could be very hands on with the operation of our properties. If the need arises, we can get to any of our properties within the same day. Lookout Lodge came about because when you are standing on the back deck looking at the Mississippi River it seems as if you are in a treetop lookout. The view is breathtaking. River Bluff Retreat came to us easily since the home is situated high up on a Mississippi River Bluff. We wanted the home to be a special retreat for families and groups looking for a place to make memories.

2. You did a great job at blending luxury and relaxation - what was your design vision?      We wanted both homes to feel welcoming and homey. My design vision was to channel the cabin vibe since they are both more remote locations. I grew up renting cabins with my family, and they were such good memories. We have tried to think of everything that people could need while on vacation so that they can just relax and enjoy! We provide a fully stocked kitchen, toiletries, coffee stations, firewood, and supplies for s'mores.

3. I noticed both properties have some great spots for taking in views of the water, was that feature important when you selected your properties?      Yes, we wanted to have something that stood out and made our places unique. I think that looking at water can be so relaxing. At both river properties you can sit outside with a cup of coffee and enjoy the water view. It just feels like vacation to me.

4. One of our favorite parts of finding great vacation rentals is finding places where you can enjoy the outdoors. What is your favorite outdoor feature?     We love the hot tubs at both places. There's just something luxurious about sitting in the hot tub with a glass of wine on a brisk evening under the stars. The kids really love splashing around in there as well! Both properties are situated on 5+ acres so there is room to spread out and play outdoor games, have a bonfire or explore.

5. What is a hidden detail or special touch that you are proud of?     At Lookout Lodge we took an unused closet and turned it into a kids camping themed play nook. Kids love to go in there, close the doors and see the glow in the dark stars. At River Bluff Retreat we turned the attached garage into an epic game room. There's a large TV with high speed Wi-Fi, pool table, foosball, shuffleboard, retro arcade game table, basketball game + more!

6. Do you have a favorite time of year to enjoy these places?      Of course, summer is always a great time to get away and enjoy family time, but we are particularly fond of Christmas time. We love to enjoy a cozy fire indoors and play games together. Everything is so beautiful and peaceful when it's covered in snow.

7. Is there a story behind any of the unique decor pieces or design touches you want to share?     We had to furnish the homes rather quickly, but I have loved finding decor pieces at different thrift stores both in the local areas and back home. We just wanted them both to have that cozy cabin vibe. I continue to add different pieces as I find them!

8. Is there a "local secret" in each area that guests absolutely must check out while they are in town?     We love to eat at The Porch in Prairie du Chien. The kids absolutely love their smash burgers and pizza. The ice cream is worth mentioning as well! We also love to explore all the local parks and nature areas. Pike's Peak and Wyalusing State Park are both nearby and are fun day trip. Getting out on the river for boating and fishing is always a must in the summertime.

9. What do you love most about hosting?    We love seeing reviews from families that have created wonderful memories at our properties. We try to include amenities that people of all ages can enjoy! It's incredibly rewarding to be a part of bringing people together to create lifelong memories. Both properties can accommodate larger groups, so we often see extended families gathering for reunions or their annual vacations.

A big thank-you to our hosts for sharing the stories, thoughtful touches, and local favorites that make Lookout Lodge and River Bluff Retreat so special! If you’re dreaming of a Mississippi River getaway filled with beautiful views, cozy evenings, and memories with your favorite people, don’t wait too long.
